Maddie’s Art Portfolio
2009
I took the class Art Fundamentals because I have always really enjoyed art class throughout school. I always look forward to art class and I wanted to be able to take some form of art in High School. Because this was the only class I could take that had anything to do with art, I took the class Art Fundamentals. I have many artistic interests, including photography, drawing, painting, pottery, and making sculptures. However, I don’t limit myself to these things, and I try to always be open to new projects.
The three most important things I learned this semester from Art Fundamentals is how to draw 3-D objects 2-D, the importance of positive vs negative and making them both interesting, and how to blend light to dark without smudging. I learned how to draw 3-D objects onto paper throughout all of the still-life drawings we did of boxes and cylinders, the sketchbook assignments we did, and the drawings with charcoal. I learned how to reproduce an angle from an object onto a piece of paper. Also, I learned the importance of positive vs. negative from the indian ink portrait of instruments. I now understand how you can have a very interesting and successful positive part of a drawing. However, if the negative space is dull and not engaging then it will ruin the whole picture. While drawing the many small drafts of the outline of instruments, I really concentrated on the negative space. I saw that overall my pictures were more interesting when the positive and negative space are equally interesting. Lastly, another thing that I learned this semester from Art Fundamentals is that I can create successful shading without smudging my work. I used to always smudge the areas that went from light to dark in order to show the changes. However, as we progressed throughout the semester I was able to drop this habit and instead use cross hatching, line width, line length, and the closeness of the lines to show change. I learned this throughout the feedback I got from my sketchbook assignments. Throughout this semester, the three most important things I learned is how to draw 3-D objects 2-D, the importance of positive vs. negative and making them both equally interesting, and how to blend light to dark without smudging.
